PHILADELPHIA – Education officials in the city will vote Thursday on whether to close more than 10 percent of the district’s schools, a potentially money-saving move that opponents contend will irreparably damage dozens of neighborhoods.
Many of the 27 buildings are in poor condition and have too many empty seats because of the district’s 23 percent enrollment drop over the past decade. The downsizing would save the cash-strapped system about $24.5 million per year, officials said.”
